Glorious Vision University, Ogwa, (GVU) on Friday, 9th December, 2016, hosted Professor Toyin Falola. In line with University tradition GVU organized its 1st Eminent Personality Public Lecture titled “The Fault Lines of Politics: Minority-Majority Identities in Nigeria Affairs” delivered by Professor Toyin Falola.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Benard Eronmonsele Aigbokhan, appreciated the guest Lecturer for accepting to deliver the lecture. He said the appearance of Professor Falola in GVU would help to boast public opinion about the University
In his opening remark, the Vice-Chancellor admonished Nigerians to de-emphasize their cultural, religious and tribal/ethnic differences and work together in unity to move the nation forward.
Toyin Falola, Ph.D, is the Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities and University Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas, Austin and the Kluge Chair of the Countries of Culture of the South, Library of Congress, Washington, DC. In his lecture, Falola discussed several issues, some of which include:
- The interconnection between group identity and politics
- The multiple players in the construction and use of an ethnic identity
- The consequence of majority-minority ethnic politics and orientation
- The effect of indirect rule and politics of ethnicity created by British
- The concept of political mobilization
- Managing a big size
The Pan-Africanist gave the following recommendations to move the nation forward:
- Political Modernity
- Leadership Modernity
- Civic Modernity
- Economic Modernity
- Social Modernity
In his conclusion, Professor Falola said the political and economic modernity that Nigeria talk about and desire can only be achieved if the following commitments are put in place;
- A commitment to federalism
- A commitment to development and poverty alleviation
- A commitment to democracy
- A commitment to accountability
- A commitment to the rule of law
- A commitment to ethnics of governance and citizenship
The lecture was well attended by scholars from various higher Institutions of learning, Politicians and the general public.
