A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE OF BASIC, APPLIED AND HEALTH SCIENCES

The Department of Microbiology, College of Basic, Applied and Health Sciences at Glorious Vision University (GVU) in Ogwa, Edo State, Nigeria, has a strong culture of academic excellence, and the development of practical skills necessary to build capacity for national building and increase organizational performance, especially at the public sector.

Commencement of Operations: The department began its undergraduate programme in 2013 after receiving verification from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to ensure it met the necessary standards for academic operations.

Accreditation: It achieved full accreditation status in 2016, which was renewed in 2021, both times for five years. This accreditation reflects the department's commitment to maintaining high educational standards and quality assurance in its academic offerings.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE MICROBIOLOGY DEGREE PROGRAMME

The Department of Microbiology aligns with GVU's overarching mission to cultivate a knowledgeable and ethically grounded generation capable of addressing contemporary societal challenges. The department aims to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge for effective public service and administration.

The department also serves as a medium for providing the human capacity needs of the public sector (civil and public services), large bureaucratic organizations, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, and voluntary-based organizations.

The admission requirements for the Microbiology program at Glorious Vision University, as approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC), are structured for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.



  1. UTME Admission:
    Candidates must possess five credit passes in relevant subjects at the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) or its equivalent, including: English Language, Biology, Physics, Chemistry.These credits must be obtained in not more than two sittings.

  2. Direct Entry Requirements:
    Candidates must have: Five credits at O’Level, including English Language and Mathematics.At least two A-Level passes in relevant subjects or an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) with a minimum of Upper Credit from a recognized institution. Additionally, candidates with Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) certificates may also qualify.

  3. Other Qualifications:
    Any other qualifications approved by the Senate of the University may also be considered.

Duration of The BSc Microbiology Programme

The BSc. Microbiology is a 5-year standard programme for students with S.S.S. Certificate, G.C.E.’O’ Level or their equivalents.
However; Direct Entry candidates will be permitted to join in year two of the programme.

Graduation Equirements

A student shall qualify for the award of a BSc. Microbiology degree when the student has completed and passed all the Courses he registered for, including all compulsory courses and such elective/optional courses as may be specified by the university/faculty.
Furthermore, the student must obtained a minimum CGPA specified by the University but not less than 2.0.
